University of Oulu

University of Oulu (UOULU) with its 13 000 students and over 3000 employees is the main university in Northern Finland. Unit of Measurement Technology (MITY) is focused on applied research with notable success: in 2013-19 MITY had the third highest number of Invention Disclosures in UOULU, second only to complete Faculties of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering, and Technology. Biocenter Oulu Virus Core Facility was established in 2006, and offers services both inside of the university and to external customers and collaborators.

Role in the project:

Lead partner, WP leader of WP1 & 4, project & consortium management, communication with the ERA-Net ForestValue Coordination Office, antimicrobial and antiviral assays, hygienic and microbial properties of various surfaces, dissemination in Finland and towards European programs.

Key personnel:

Professor Vesa Virtanen is Director of the Kajaani University Consortium and MITY. He has over 80 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of analytical chemistry, processing & analytics of biomasses and sensor development. He has experience in research work in Finland, Belgium, France and Germany. Professor Aki Manninen is Head of Biocenter Oulu Virus Core Facility, and expert in cell biology with more than 20 years of experience with viral vectors. Research Manager Pekka Kilpeläinen is a project manager of the WOOD for HEALTH project in UOULU and plans practical work for antimicrobial and hygienic studies. He has experience of over 30 years in cell and molecular biology, including five years in UK and Sweden.

Relevant expertise:

MITY carried recently extensive monitoring of physical, chemical and microbiological conditions in prized wooden school of Tuupala and studied stress of students both in Tuupala and in a control school in a pioneering project (to project word). The unit has strong experience in development of sensor, spectroscopic and chemical analytics for health, environmental and biomass applications. It also processes various biomasses & natural raw materials and studies their health beneficial compounds and bioactivities such as antimicrobial properties both in projects and as a contracted service to industry.
